Kingfisher Chick release

Writer: Silverstream VolunteersSilverstream Volunteers

Special day at the Reserve today.

Last week, a volunteer was working in the West end of the Reserve when he noticed two Kingfisher chicks on top of a fallen tree. Upon further inspection, two more chicks were found buried in the rubble under the tree.

He flagged down two walkers on the track for help, one of whom was a volunteer for the South Island Wildlife Hospital! The chicks were transported to the refuge for the week, where they could eat, drink, and practice flying. They were very hungry and vocal, and proved to be popular with their carers.

Today, we were thrilled to be able to release them back into the Reserve.

A huge thanks to Dave Birch for his efforts, and thank you to the South Island Wildlife Hospital for their rehabilitation work.
